Lakaï Dance Theatre
"A dance company of the people"
Lakaï Dance Theatre roots itself in stories of home in order to highlight the issues affecting our communities and neighborhoods.
Our Story
The brainchild of director/choreographer McKersin, the company takes its name from the word for "home" in his native tongue of Haitian Creole (Kreyol). Lakaï Dance Theatre is a subsidiary of Lakaï Arts with a mission to open the doors of the Arts to everyone. We do this by highlighting the stories that aren't normally shown on these big stages. We bring in stories, some personal from our communities and neighborhoods. We want the best for our collective marginalized communities. We want people to feel seen and heard. This is why it is important that we continue the work that we do. This is how we open doors to the theaters. Gone are the days when people have to wonder if the theater is truly a place they belong in.
Meet The Team
LDT draws from jazz, hip-hop, and Afro-Diasporic styles while incorporating powerful spoken word and live music to paint complex stories that reflect the realities of inner-city existence. The company makes work that uses the idea of home to trace the ripple effects not only of harm, but also of healing, through families and neighborhoods.
