Lakaï Arts: Building Community Through the Afro-Diaspora
Lakaï Arts is a non-profit organization that believes in restoring communities of color through the Arts and combining Arts Education with tools of self sufficiency. Lakaï holds cultural dance and music events in communities as a means to get people together to take part in exploring the afro-diaspora. We also lead workshops to identify and counter trauma, hold youth programming, all while honoring existing local organizational efforts. Lakaï Arts believes that the arts can be a powerful tool for healing and transformation, and they are committed to using their platform to create positive change in the world.
Here are some specific examples of how Lakaï Arts has made a difference in the community:
-
We have a free after-school program for students in the Boston Public Schools district with a focus on West-African dance and drumming. Their parents are provided resources and education towards building self sufficiency.
-
We have created a safe space for people of all race and background to come together and express themselves through the arts and hold conversation.
-
We have partnered with local organizations to provide resources and support to people in need, primarily schools in under-resourced neighborhoods.
-
Using our subsidiary, Lakaï Dance Theatre, we highlight the stories that aren't normally shown on the big stages. We bring in stories, some personal from our communities and neighborhoods.
